Solution: Given a positive integer n, the possible remainders when n is divided by 4 are r = 0; 1; 2; 3. Then n has the form 4k, 4k +1, 4k +2 or 4k +3 for some integer k. If n is odd, then the only possibilities are 4k + 1 and 4k + 3 since the other two are even. |
